BLOGS - FANBOY CLEARLY A GOOD MOVE by admin posted on July 06, 2011

FANBOY BY MARK SABLAN PHOTO BY ZAC MORAN Awhile ago, I attended the launch of John Lloyd Cruz as the newest endorser of shampoo brand Head & Shoulders. It’s a pretty interesting move, considering how he used to endorse a competing brand—Clear, which just released a TVC starring international soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo. But as Lloydie explained during the press con, he wasn’t satisfied with his old shampoo, so he started to check other brands and hoped for a better product, and eventually found The One when he tried Head & Shoulders. Lloydie, of course, has a commercial for the brand, together with fellow endorser and Imortal co-star Angel Locsin. My favorite part? Lloydie saying “Oh em” like a colegiala. It almost made me like him. While I don’t hate him, I’m not the hugest JLC fan either. Several years ago, back when he was just starting out, I spent some days with him in Batangas, for a shoot with Blue Soda, which he was endorsing back then. He wasn’t really snobbish, but he usually kept to himself. I wasn’t starstruck (but I had to ask for a photo opp, of course). Years after that, when I was working for a celebrity magazine, my editorial assistant had a little story for me. She was compiling answers for our survey section and when he asked John Lloyd our question—Who would you date if you were gay?—he snapped at her, “Why would I want to answer that?” Embarrassed, my EA ran away from him and started the I-hate-Lloydie club. From then on, I started to have this sort of dislike for him, which made me not like any of his movies (which I still opted to watch though). It was nice to have been invited to the Head & Shoulders event awhile ago. They showed the new TVC there and I’ve seen it at home several more times. I think I finally became a Lloydie fan, thanks to that “Oh em” part. Mark Sablan Online Editor E-mail me at mark.sablan@megapublishinggroup.com
