BLOGS - FANBOY I can’t wait for the Richard Poon and Jose Mari Chan concert! by admin posted on November 10, 2011

FANBOY BY MARK SABLAN I can’t wait for The Songwriter and The Crooner, the upcoming December 2 concert of Jose Mari Chan and Richard Poon. I adore both of them because apart from being great singers with great voices, they are amazing songwriters as well. Jose Mari Chan, or tito Joe (as a lot of people would call him), wrote a lot of great songs: his hit singles “Beautiful Girl”, “Tell Me Your Name”, and “Constant Change”, plus songs sung by others, like “Mamang Sorbetero” sung by Celeste Legaspi. Richard, on the other hand, has composed a lot of catchy songs, from those included in the debut album of his old band U Turn to beautiful compositions for other artists like Sam Milby (“Be Mine”). I actually have a “past” with the two talented artists. Several years ago, I wrote an article for the Philippine Daily Inquirer entitled “The Country’s Best Music Video”. I was referring to tito Joe’s music video for “Beautiful Girl”—how can it not be the best when it combines in one video all the big names that time: Cherie Gil (without the glass of water for splashing), Sheryl Cruz, Sharon Cuneta (hair styled with Spray Net), Regine Velasquez, and Vilma Santos (without her signature hanky). Tetchie Agbayani is also included in the video although she wasn’t present during the shoot so they just used some video clip. The video ends with the most beautiful girl Jose Mari Chan has ever met: his wife. Awww. A couple of days after the article got published, I received the sweetest e-mail—from Jose Mari Chan himself! So during the press con for the concert last November 8, I made sure I mentioned it to tito Joe. It was nice to see Richard during the press con, too. I met Richard for the first time several years ago, back when he just formed the band U Turn together with my friend Teri (of FOJ/Vanna Vanna!). I watched a couple of their shows and was very impressed with Richard’s singing, songwriting, and performing skills. He said that he was looking for songs for their debut album so I gave him a demo of a couple of my songs. After some months, the band’s album was finally released. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that one of my songs made it, and that it became a collaboration with Richard, who added some parts and changed the arrangement. The song is called “Be With You” and you can check the music video HERE. So, yeah, I’ll definitely be watching the concert this December 2.
