A happy and slightly wistful David Archuleta met with the press at the media launch of TV5’s latest miniserye, Nandito Ako, last February 4, 2012 at the Meralco Fitness Center Multi-Purpose Hall. Happy, because he enjoyed filming the primetime series, but also wistful because he will soon leave the country he’s dubbed his second home.
“What I will remember most about shooting in Manila, more than anything, it’s the relationships I’ve made. The most important thing for me is my family; they are the reason for who I am today. The cast of Nandito Ako, the TV5 staff, they’ve become my family,” enthused the singer. “They've taken me in, they've made me feel comfortable, and they’ve been so patient with me. They've always been supportive, encouraging, and helped me to do the series as best as I could," he added.
The pop sensation revealed that since this is his first-ever acting project he felt nervous at the onset, especially when it came to reciting lines in Tagalog. His impression changed when actual filming began. ”The lines I have in Tagalog are not too hard; they try to keep it simple for me. It was really fun; it was a challenge because most of the time the cast is speaking in Tagalog and I can't respond at the start. It was a challenging experience for me but it was a good exercise for me, I guess."
Of course it wasn’t all work and no play for the American Idol Season 7 finalist. David fulfilled his wish to ride a jeepney again and also visited a local market. The charismatic singer was spotted backstage as well at the recent concert of his Nandito Ako leading lady Jasmine Curtis-Smith’s sister, Anne Curtis. Jasmine, who was also present at the press launch, revealed that he advised David beforehand that her sister “really isn’t a singer.”
However, Archuleta said that he enjoyed the concert. "It was really fun. What I respected most about Anne is, she told the audience to follow your dreams. She's open about not being a good singer, but she still said, 'You know, I can do this.' I like the message she sent to the people. I think that's something.”
Last year the singer made the announcement that he will go on a hiatus from music as he embarks on a two-year religious mission for the Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which he is a proud member of. David shared that he does harbor fears of losing his popularity after the hiatus but feels that it is something he should do. "It's always a scary thing because you don't know what's gonna happen. It's a decision, it's like American Idol. It's not the same degree in the people's eyes,” he revealed. “I don't know what's gonna happen. I'm in a job that I love. It's hard to find a job. I just found a job and it's hard to let go, school, and the comfort of home. It has been a hard decision to make. It was a decision that took a couple of years to make. But it's scary. It's a scary thing to do but I know it's gonna be worth it because I've learned to trust that feeling in my life,” he ended.
David, together with his tour manager Kari Sellards, left the country last Sunday morning. He is set to perform in Singapore for a mini-showcase before going back to America, but will come back to the Philippines to perform in the Pyropalooza event of Close Up this February 11, 2012.
